Review the differences that matter

Compare two texts before accepting a revision

Text Compare is an online text diff tool for reviewing an original and an edited version together. It marks what was removed and added, including changes to punctuation, capitalization and whitespace. The comparison runs in your browser; it does not ask a writing model to decide which version is better.

Use it after a human edit, a grammar check, an AI rewrite or a document handoff. A sentence can sound smoother while quietly changing a date, a condition or the strength of a claim. Seeing both versions helps you separate a useful language change from a change that needs an explanation. Keep the original in the first field and the revision in the second so additions and deletions stay easy to interpret.

Read additions, deletions and detail warnings

The original shows removed text with deletion styling, and the revised version shows added text with insertion styling. The report also lists selected important-detail changes. These checks look for changed text patterns; they do not verify facts against an outside source. A changed date may be a correction, and an unchanged date may still be wrong.

ChangeQuestion to ask
A number or date changesWas the value intentionally updated, and does the source support it?
A quotation or citation changesDoes the revised wording still match the quoted source and attribution?
A link or email address changesIs the destination still correct, including capitalization where it matters?
A phrase is removedDid the edit remove a limitation, exception or condition the reader needs?
A large block is highlightedWas the paragraph rearranged? Read both blocks before treating every mark as an independent edit.

A small rewrite can make a large factual change

Read the highlighted section in context, including the sentence before and after it. Pay particular attention to words such as may, must, only, before and after. The diff makes wording changes visible, but it cannot certify that two passages have the same meaning.

An editorial comparison example

Original

The pilot may begin on 12 June if all three teams approve the plan.

Revision to review

The pilot will begin on 19 June after all three teams approve the plan.
The date and certainty changed. A reviewer should establish whether both edits are intentional before using the revision.

Compare document text without losing sight of the source

You can paste both versions or import documents into either field. Each version supports up to 100,000 characters. Word, PDF and other supported imports are converted to text: this is not a page-layout comparison, a tracked-changes editor or an image diff. A scanned or complex PDF may yield incomplete text; check the import notice and compare the extracted passages with the original file.

For a long report, begin with the revised sections. Very large changes may be grouped to keep the report responsive, and moving a paragraph may appear as a removal plus an addition. Copy or export the revised text only after checking the important differences. The tool does not merge changes automatically, search the web for matching passages or calculate a plagiarism score.

Questions about text compare

Does Text Compare upload either version?

No. The comparison and document text extraction run locally. The server checks your tool allowance using an identifier and a request fingerprint, without receiving either source text.

What do the red and green highlights mean?

Deletion styling marks text removed from the original; insertion styling marks text added in the revision. Both versions are labeled and use deletion or insertion markup, so color is not the only way to interpret a change.

Can I compare Word documents or PDFs?

You can import supported documents into both fields and compare the extracted text. Each version can contain up to 100,000 characters. Original layout, comments, images and tracked changes are not compared. Check the extraction when a PDF contains scans, columns or tables.

Does it detect plagiarism or calculate similarity against the web?

No. It compares only the two supplied versions. It does not search published sources, identify an author or return a plagiarism percentage. Use source research and attribution review for those questions.

Why is a whole paragraph highlighted?

Reordered text or a large rewrite can appear as a removed block and an added block. Long comparisons may group large changes to keep the display responsive. Read the two passages together to understand what changed.

Will it merge the versions or accept changes for me?

No. This is a review tool, not an automatic merge editor. It preserves the texts you supply and lets you copy or export the revised version. Make any further edits deliberately before using that version.

Does checking the same result use another allowance?

Reusing an unchanged result already shown does not consume another use. Changing either source creates a different comparison. Copying or exporting the result does not use another daily allowance.
